Ages and Stages:  Watch Your Child’s Speech and Language Grow

By 9 months most children will:
  • Respond to his/her name
  • Respond to the telephone ringing or a knock at the door
  • Understand “no”
  • Get what he/she wants through gestures, e.g. reaching to be picked up
  • Play social games with you – e.g. “Peek-a-boo”
  • Enjoy being around people
  • Babble and repeats sounds – e.g. “bababa…”, “duhduhduh…”

What you can do to help:
  • Imitate your baby’s sounds
  • Use natural gesture along with verbal language (e.g. wave as you say “bye-bye”
  • Hold a desired toy or object in front of your baby and name it as you let your baby hold it.
  • Name objects your baby shows interest in.  Repeat the same words over and over again.
  • Show your baby picture books and name the pictures.
  • Play interactive games, including finger plays, nursery rhymes and songs (e.g. Round and round the garden…. This little piggy…..)

If you think your child is not meeting the developmental milestones as expected don’t ‘wait and see’. Contact Us (link to KidsAbility/Services/Waterloo Preschool Speech and Language/About Us/Contact Us) to make a referral for a speech and language assessment.
