ACS provides assessment and consultation services for children and youth up to their 18th birthday, who live in Waterloo Region and Wellington County, who find it difficult to communicate effectively through speech or writing.
Services are provided at our Waterloo Site, and/or in the client’s home, school or community.
We are an Expanded Level Clinic with the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long –Term Care. This means we are able to prescribe a wide range of technology to support face to face communication and written communication that can be purchased or leased.
We are a team based service. Your family’s team may consist of you and your child/youth and one or more of the following disciplines: speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, communicative disorder assistant, technologist and special education liaison teacher.
Services are provided for clients who have one or both of the following alternate and/or augmentative communication needs:
- Face to Face Communication: Individuals who are non-verbal or who are verbal but are very difficult to understand and require some alternative or augmentative means of communicating.
- Writing Aids: Individuals who have a physical disability that affects their written communication skills, have home writing needs, and are able to independently generate text. This is also for children under 6 years of age who are demonstrating the potential to develop literacy but due to their physical disability require some alternative means to paper and pencil for writing.
