How Can Autism be Treated?
- Many different factors can contribute to the developmental problems experienced by children with autism. Therefore, there are many different approaches that may be helpful
- Currently there is no one treatment that has been accepted by everyone as "the one and only" approach to use
- Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) is an intervention that has been found to be helpful to some children with autism in
- IBI is based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)
- IT focuses on teaching children the skills they need to develop independence, and to participate more fully in school and the community
- By definition, IBI is intensive, often beginning with very structured, individualized, one-on-one instruction
- It is important to remember that all children are different. What works well for one child may not work as well for another
- Children change. What helps at one point in time may not be as effective at another time
- An advantage of IBI is that it includes frequent, direct measurement of the child's performance, so that changes in a child's learning or behaviour can be more readily identified
