FASD Lessons Learned

  • 100%  of alcohol consumed (during pregnancy) crosses the placenta 100% of the time. The  result is brain damage
  • "Confabulation" is a common deficit; the brain is unable to fill in the gaps the way a healthy brain  learns to do when processing information
  • An FAS child's  brain does not "habituate"
  • We need to focus on the life needs of the child and not on their deficits
  • "Don't waste words". Short concise directives work best
