Occupational therapy is rooted in the belief that occupation gives meaning to life and is an important determinant of health. Occupational Therapists are regulated health professionals, licensed with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.
Occupational Therapists at KidsAbility work with children and adolescents (birth to age 18) having difficulty doing an activity and will consider the child, the activity and the environment to minimize the challenges and increase productivity. KidsAbility requires all Occupational Therapists to be members in good standing of their college.
The occupational therapist’s focus is on helping people to perform the activities (or occupations) of their daily life that are meaningful to them (self care, productivity and leisure). Some self care activities that we participate in include getting dressed, bathing and feeding ourselves. Productive activities are those activities that allow us to contribute to society, such as through work or attending school. Leisure activities include ways we like to have fun and seek enjoyment out of life.
The occupational therapist might:
- Alter the activity
- Change the way the person performs the activity
- provide the person with equipment to help complete the activity
- make modifications to the environment that will assist the person in doing the activity
