Social Work Services 
 
Social Work services at KidsAbility are provided by social workers who have a Master of Social Work degree, and are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service WorkersKidsAbility requires that all Social Workers are members in good standing of their college.
 
Clients and their families on the KidsAbility caseload are eligible for Social Work services. The extent of service is based on the needs of the child/family and upon the availability of Social Work resources.

With the exception of the initial intake interview, all involvement with Social Work is on a voluntary basis. Our focus is with issues related to the personal and family impact of communication, developmental and/or physical conditions.
 
We respect the family’s right to privacy and to the confidential treatment of information.
 
The services available to children and their families on the KidsAbility caseload may include:
  • Initial Intake Interview
  • Counselling
  • Information About Community Programs and Services
  • Groups
  • Discharge Planning
  • Team Consultation
What can Social Workers address?

  • Adjustment to Illness and Disability: enhancing coping skills related to feelings of loss, grief and role change; assessing and intervening related to anxiety, depression, and/or anti-social/maladaptive behaviours; providing an understanding of the impact of illness/disability on family relationships; facilitating linkages with support systems
  • Caregiver stress: assisting in identifying causes of stress and adaptive coping strategies; providing education and support regarding caregiver concerns such as isolation and role changes; facilitating linkages to community resources
  • Individual and Interpersonal concerns: assessing role of emotional/ social factors on health status and behaviour; providing counselling to assist client to gain insight into behaviours impacting on overall well-being
  • Family Conflict: providing counselling to address communication problems, dysfunctional social interactions and stressful situations/behaviours; making referrals to appropriate community services
  • Social Isolation: examining the adequacy of existing social supports; exploring options with client and family to strengthen formal and informal supports; intervening to reduce obstacles to social interaction
  • Resources: assessing client’s current living situation and needs; identifying options; support with applications/referrals; advocating for timely delivery of services and programs
  • Parenting: promoting positive parenting strategies and problem solving; facilitating effective communication between home and others involved with the child; assessing risk
  • Future Planning Needs: assisting client and family to understand care needs, participate in planning decisions, and emotionally prepare for transitions
