Leveraging technology as an enabler to achieve goals

KidsAbility is a member of the eHealth (Ontario) secure fibre ONENetwork infrastructure.

The secure eHealth infrastructure permits us to be a member of OTN, the Ontario Telemedicine Network  and eCHN,  the Electronic Children’s Health Network.

As an OTN Tele-Medicine site, we can provide remote follow-up assessments for our clients by their specialist in another location. This saves the family time and energy by eliminating the need to drive to Toronto, London, or Hamilton for a routine visit.

As a member of eCHN,  the Electronic Children’s Health Network registered therapists at KidsAbility have access to electronic  health records for our clients. eCHN …
  • is used daily by clinical staff and Health Records staff
  • is a tremendous productivity tool
  • provides immediate reports from Sick Kids, McMaster and London Health Sciences
  • has increased therapist knowledge on clients (instead of waiting 1-2 months it is 1-2 days) and decisions are more informed

Therapy staff  are creatively utilizing every-day  devices to enhance their programs and services:
  • Xperiential Learning Systems (Virtual Reality) places kids in a PC video game; therapist can set range of motion for therapeutic purposes
  • Wii generates engagement and movement
  • Smart Board technology currently being reviewed for effectiveness with peer inclusion of Autism clients
  • Digital video recording is widely used (with consent) to track progress and provide feedback
  • ACS (Augmentative Communication Services) is utilizing high and low technology solutions to support  face-to-face and written communication needs. iPod Touch  is a simple innovation.
