What is Theraputic Recreation?
 
Therapeutic Recreation (TR) focuses on enabling persons with disabilities to acquire the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will allow them to enjoy their leisure optimally, function independently, and participate as fully as possible in society.

Theraputic Recreation  Philosophy

What services do Recreation Therapists (RTs) at KidsAbility offer?
  • Recreation Therapists work with clients and their families to identify leisure interests, address leisure barriers, and develop leisure skills. Press here for tips on accessing recreation.
  • Recreation Therapists provide information on inclusive and specialized recreation programs in the community, and recreation and leisure supports that are available. Press here to access Inclusive Recreation Directories.
  • Recreation Therapists facilitate therapeutic group programs that focus on leisure skill development (physical skills, group skills, etc.) and leisure education. Press here to access KidsAbility Activity Guides.
  • Recreation Therapists work with community recreation providers to develop inclusive or specialized programs that meet the interests and needs of youth with disabilities in our community.
  • Therapeutic Recreation Services has an equipment loan service, providing specialized and adapted recreation and leisure equipment for clients to use. For more information click here.
When should a client request TR Services?
  • The family is new to the area and would like information on community recreation opportunities
  • The family would like advice on appropriate recreation programs, supports, or adapted recreation equipment for their child
  • The child is experiencing challenges or encountering barriers in a community program and the family would like assistance or support
  • A client or family is interested in developing a new program based on a client’s interest.
