We recognize transitions can be difficult!
- Transition to Child Care, transition to public school
- Transition from one program to another; from one therapist to another
- Transition to teen years, transition to high school
- Transitions to adulthood
Life transitions in general can be a challenge with special needs. The journey with special needs can be difficult and isolating. Parents of special needs children share an emotion and empathy that is different. KidsAbility is committed to assisting with transitions and supporting a life journey as best as possible.
Transition services are provided, specifically when children transition into the school system and school based services. Ask your child’s therapist about transition supports available. For more information on support services go to Transition Services on the Services Menu.
Some resources:
- Transition to school Checklist
- Coping with Separation Anxiety
- Moving On - KidsAbility, with funding from Ontario Trillium Foundation, completed a study on “Moving On”. The goal was to develop a process to transition youth with physical disabilities to adult living that is supported by the community. An outcome of that study is the Transition Network Committee. In response to parents voices during the strategic planning process, KidsAbility facilitated the initial peer-to-peer parent support group that has now become the Waterloo Region Family Network (WRFN). For more information contact admin@waterlooregionfamilynetwork.com
Support for the journey can also come through education and workshops. KidsAbility staff and the WRFN host a number of workshops; consult the KidsAbility Calendar. Watch for community-wide education forums hosted by KidsAbility’s Centre of Excellence.
"Oh Christmas Free" in December is day when KidsAbility provides a morning or recreational child care so mom and dad can have a break and go Christmas shopping! Pre-registration is required so watch the KidsAbility Calendar in the fall.
