The mission of KidsAbility is to empower children and youth with special needs to realize their full potential. We are proud of our reputation and results supported by our skilled professionals, government funding and generosity of our donors. But there remain many unmet needs – for families with children eligible and waiting for our current government-funded services, and those outside our funded mandate. Many families not eligible for services provided by us today are purchasing them from other providers and have expressed a desire to access them through KidsAbility.
In response, we are excited to announce the launch of a new initiative – Firefly Therapy Services. Services provided by Firefly Therapy Services will be operated as a separate business, supplementary to those currently provided by KidsAbility. They will be available only for children and youth not eligible for our funded services. It’s very important to us that we not compromise in any way the high quality services that we already provide.
Beginning in May 2010, Firefly Therapy Services will offer individual Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy on a fee-for-service basis that is market-competitive to families in the communities served by KidsAbility. Plans for several summer camps are also under way. We anticipate that the services provided by Firefly Therapy Services will grow over time in response to family needs.
The launch of Firefly Therapy Services will benefit KidsAbility and allow us to serve more children. Structured as a not-for-profit ‘Social Enterprise’, any income earned by Firefly Therapy Services will be reinvested to support and further the mission of KidsAbility. Supporting our mission is our highest priority.
The launch of Firefly Therapy Services does not diminish the need for community and donor support for the programs and services already provided by KidsAbility. As of April 2010, there are over 1,300 children on a waiting list who are eligible for our services.
This is an exciting opportunity for KidsAbility to serve children more broadly and ensure continued sustainability of the valued services for the benefit of children and youth in the communities we serve.
