KidsAbility has introduced a new method for early intervention that is contributing to significantly reduced therapy wait times by utilizing group assessments, enabling children to receive early intervention in a social setting.

Alyssa Polley, a Speech Language Pathologist with nine years of experience at KidsAbility, noticed that her clients were facing longer wait times for services, which concerned her. Determined to find a solution, Alyssa proposed conducting playgroup assessments for children with similar needs. This approach allowed her to evaluate three to four children simultaneously while observing their interactions with peers.

For Alyssa, the transition from concept to implementation was not just about enhancing efficiency; it was about recognizing the profound impact small changes can have on children’s lives. As the initiative grew, she witnessed her idea materialize with tangible results.

Alyssa emphasizes, “The aspect I’m most proud of is the reduced waitlist. We’re able to reach children sooner, which significantly benefits them, their families, and the community.”

Throughout the project, Alyssa felt supported by her colleagues and leadership, which was crucial for its success. “It’s comforting to know I had backing, not only from the Rocket team, who supported the idea from the beginning, but also from colleagues and other speech pathologists who were enthusiastic about trying something new. It made me feel heard and that my professional opinions were valued.”

She also reflects on the satisfaction that comes from knowing her work has had a positive impact. “I feel like I’ve made a meaningful contribution to services, our community, and many children’s lives.”

Thanks to Alyssa’s leadership, SLP group assessments are not only reducing wait times but also transforming how KidsAbility provides care to children and families.
